Ideas

Save the Earth
Contact the Strathcona Wilderness Centre, or the Sierra Club to see if they have volunteer opportunities. Talk to your school science teacher and help organize a plan to make your school more environmentally friendly.

Media Experience
Most communities have some forms of media, radio, television or news print, and they often have special programs for youth and young adults. Call or email and ask if they have a volunteer coordinator. It’s a great way to learn the business.

Animal Lovers
If you love animals, contact a nearby animal shelter or wildlife sanctuary in your neighbourhood. You may be able to help by answering the telephone, or feed, walk or groom the animals.

Libraries
Libraries need lots of help—from organizing their computer resource centre, to help with organizing community programs. Contact your local library and see what good they can put you up to!

Seniors’ Centres
It’s a proven fact that young and old people just get along. There are many volunteer opportunities that involve connecting with seniors in nursing homes and senior residences, such as reading, or playing games like checkers, cards; taking seniors on walks, or assisting in the dining room.

Garden Centres and Nurseries
Check the yellow pages (or call us) for listings of garden centres in Strathcona county. Opportunities may include weeding & watering, grooming outside areas, running the cash register, or loading cars for customers. Because of insurance liability some centres may not be able to use volunteers, but it pays to call around.

Strathcona Idol
Are you a talented musician, or artist? Organize a concert or show to not only showcase your talents but to also raise funds for a cause you believe in.

Teach Something You Love to Do
Are you a star skateboarder? Are you an internet or tech-expert? Whatever you are great at, you can teach to others. Small kids, peers, adults, seniors—even your own teacher! Don’t be afraid to think outside the box. That’s what teens are amazing at doing.

Start Your Own Business
Are you a hard worker? Set up a business—walking dogs, mowing lawns, and give a portion of your earnings to a local charity. It’s great marketing and it gives you incentive to work hard!

Call Us!! Lots of organizations let us know about opportunities for volunteers. That’s what we do. We’ll help you come up with an idea of your own, or connect you to an organization that needs your energy!
