PRIVATELY OWNED HOMES FOR RENT: For availability of privately owned housing options, see the Renter’s Guide (found at most grocery and drug stores) or check the classified ads in the Sherwood Park/Strathcona County News (published Tuesdays and Fridays).
CO-OP HOUSING: A housing co-op is a non-profit group of people who, together, hold the title and mortgage to their property and the buildings they occupy, working cooperatively to manage and maintain the premises. Each member must purchase forty shares for $1000.00 which is refunded when the member moves out. Maximum income levels do apply and are based on unit size required. Wait times depend on need and availability. Monthly rates vary from approximately $670.00 for 2 bedroom units to $755.00 for 4 bedroom units. Application forms can be picked up at Strathcona County Family & Community Services (FCS), 2nd Floor, 2755 Broadmoor Boulevard, Sherwood Park, or call 780.464.4044 for details. A $20.00 non-refundable fee must be paid when the application is returned to FCS.
SUBSIDIZED HOUSING: Both housing co-ops in Sherwood Park (see listings on this page) offer subsidized units. Capital Region Housing Corporation (Office: 780.420.6161, Mon-Fri, 8:30am-4pm. Info line: 24/7, 780.428.8200. Web site: www.crhc.ab.ca) also offers subsidies for individuals and families with low income. Net worth of all assets is taken into consideration when figuring total income. There are no low-income complexes in Sherwood Park. However, one may apply for a private landlord subsidy for apartment rentals. There is a waiting list and wait times are dependent on need and availability. To qualify for a subsidy, one must be a Canadian Citizen, landed immigrant, or a refugee sponsored by the government. There are maximum income limits, updated annually, and dependent on the size of the unit.
SENIORS HOUSING: Call the Information and Volunteer Centre’s Seniors Referral Line at 780.464.4265 for a listing of seniors lodges, apartments and long term care facilities. Sherwood Park can offer both subsidized and non-subsidized housing options for seniors. Capital Care Strathcona also includes Laurier House and a secure Alzheimer’s and dementia unit within their care campus.
ADULT RESTRICTED COMPLEXES: Condo units within adult restricted complexes are privately owned. Information on units for sale or rent may be obtained from local realtors or the local newspaper.
