Who would ever have thought??
May 1, 2009
I must apologize to every youth out there for ever once thinking that youth didn’t care. It is a generalization that I will never use again. I was brought to my knees by being exposed to some very inspiring youth from across Canada.
While I was I was in Ottawa this last week at a youth conference, I was shocked to see over 100 youth ranging between the ages of 13 years of age and up who were involved if not leading some sort of YOUTH initiative involving community services and other such endeavours.
These youth came from all walks of life and brought with them their own personal skills and talents. Some were street smart, homeless, academically challenged, phenomenal public speakers, physically and mentally challenged, artistically creative, internet smart, dramatically and musically talented, sports orientated but most of all INSPIRED.
As you can see, it didn’t matter what age, race or talent you owned, everyone NO MATTER WHAT took an opportunity to explore and take leadership of change that would positively affect someone other then themselves in a life altering experience.
I suppose what I would like to do is put forth a challenge to any youth out there who wants to prove the “adults” wrong. Make a difference! Do something… anything….that will aid another. The sky’s the limit, don’t be shy, BE BOLD! Let the Youth Volunteer Program help you find your vision.
Where do you see youth fitting into volunteerism? What holds you back?
Share your experiences, and it would help more people understand how youth can make a difference.
Let me leave you with this thought:
