Blog - What's in a Word?

I was at some national meetings last week with Volunteer Canada where there was a lengthy discussion around the word volunteer. We were debating the national definition of a volunteer centre and whether or not a centre should be required to have the word “volunteer” in its name in order to qualify for the special status of “Volunteer Centre”.

I had no idea!

I must apologize to every youth out there for ever once thinking that youth didn’t care. It is a generalization that I will never use again. I was brought to my knees by being exposed to some very inspiring youth from across Canada.

While I was in Ottawa this last week at a youth conference, I was shocked to see over 100 youth ranging between the ages of 13 years ...

Are we really going to blog?

So what business does the Information and Volunteer Centre have blogging? It seems everyone is doing it these days. Why add to the clutter and noise of cyberspace? Well let me tell you, there aren’t very many non-profits out there blogging. Which means very little of that clutter and noise has a non-profit slant to it.

As a parent, I hope that we can share our experiences with one another in order to achieve a positive approach to supporting our children in the community service area. As a youth volunteer coordinator I have been exposed to youth of all ages. The “leaders”, the “curious but shy”, the “followers”, the “risk takers” and the “non-believers” .
