In the Neighbourhood
- help coordinate Strathcona County Virtual Volunteer opportunities
- organize a project for National Youth Service Day
- volunteer to keep you neighbourhood park a “Garbage free zone”
- intern at a local charity or non-profit organization
- go on a volunteer vacation
- offer to help a senior paint the outside of their house
- form a committee with a few friends and attend local town meetings to give youth a voice
- offer to teach some computer skills to those in need but cannot afford individual schooling
- join the Youth Page and write stories, take photo’s and mentor youth for the Sherwood Park/Strathcona County News
- help clean up graffiti by organizing a clean up crew in your neighbourhood
- take an IVC New Resident’s package to a new family on your street
- collect art and school supplies for an inner city school
- organize a benefit to help raise funds for a shelter, organization or cause
- work at or organize a community garden
- research environmental issues in your area; write letters to government and civic officials to encourage them to make positive changes
- join the Youth Council or Youth Advisory committee
- gather clothing from your neighbors and donate it to a local shelter
- organize a public issues forum for your neighborhood
- start a “Welcome Wagon” committee in your school to welcome new students
- mentor a younger person
- donate books to your local library
- start a book club in your area
Work with Children
- help teach a younger child to read
- offer free babysitting to a family in need
- help out at an after-school care program
- repaint or repair playground equipment
- make care packages for children at camp
- help coach a community sports team
- teach a child a special skill: skateboarding, cooking, music lessons, sewing (The sky’s the limit! Focus on your skills and what you enjoy doing.)
- plan a project for a local Boys & Girls Club
- put together baby packages for the food bank
Working with the Elderly
- spend some time with your grandparents(s) or seniors that you have a connection with. Converse with them and listen to their stories – they have so much to share. Maybe record or write down memories of his/her life; make a memory book
- perform seasonal yard work such as raking leaves, snow shoveling, clean gutters or wash windows for seniors in your area
- go for a walk with a senior citizen in your community
- organize a bingo, craft, or game night at a seniors centre
- have a ‘senior’ prom at a nursing home
- read to, write a letter for, or just visit with a senior citizen
- use your musical talents to entertain at a seniors facility
- make lap blankets
